"The voice of......"
He is the voice for the "ain't sh*t" guy.
A lot of us love Tiller's music but if you ever really take a second and think about it, majority of his music is from the prospective of a guy who has messed up in a relationship. We all wondered who the no good guy was Keyshia Cole was singing about before she got into the fish plate business and I think we found our answer.
Lets take a look at some key lyrics from a few of his most popular tracks:
"Don't, don't play with her, don't be dishonest (Aye)
Still not understandin' this logic (Aye)
I'm back and I'm better (And I'm better)
I want you bad as ever"
While you are busy trying to catch the last "Don't" at the end of the song, you need to listen deeper to the lyrics. In his breakout hit that introduced him to the world, Tiller lets you know in the opening lines "I'm back and I'm better". He basically telling the young lady, "I wasn't sh*t, now I am sh*t and I want you to drop the ain't sh*t guy you with now".
"let Em Know"
"Oh why, didn’t you
Tell me get my sh*t together and think it through"
"She gon’ give me a second chance or nah?
Did I make you fall in love again or nah?
Fuck them other niggas you're mine"
"Im coming back for good so let them n*ggas know its mine" is how Pen Griffrey starts off the first real song on his debut project Trap Soul. This track sets the tone for the whole album. Tiller is a clearly a flawed individual who has realized his ways have ruined a good thing. He essentially wants that old thing back. He tried a new relationship but the girl just didn't compare to what he previously had. He also feels that he is so unique that other men just don't compare.
Tiller lets em know on this joint.
"Baby sometimes I feel so naive
Thinking you would come back to me
Say I fucked up, I'd have to agree
But second chances I do believe in"
"Truth be told I know that somebody
Somebody as real as me, someone as sincere as me
That's what I'm afraid of
Don't you dare give him the same love"
Bryson Tiller really F'd up. AGAIN At least that's what it feels like from this song and he knows the aftermath of what he has done is real this time. He took what he had for granted over and over and now it is gone. This song is a fight to get back what he lost. He is pleading for just one more chance and begging her not to give her love to someone else.
He is letting his Keyshia Cole know that if she returns, he is never letting her go again.
"Right My Wrongs"
Tell me, how can I right my wrongs?
Something that I should know
All the things that you went through, girl I never meant to put you through it twice, no"
"I've gotta right my wrongs
With you is where I belong
You've been down from the go, recognition is what you want
And it's something that I should know"
In this song, Tiller is trying to figure out how to make things right. He knows he has made mistakes but he isn't quite sure how to make up for them this time. He never meant to hurt his girl, especially not twice. You can sense his downfalls are not just affecting his love one but taking a toll on him as well.
"Sh*t was going good girl
Now it's looking bad girl
Can we take it back girl?
You gave me a task girl
Go clean up my act girl
Done that, where you at girl?"
"How you want it to go, we can do this slow
Pick up where we left off, I don't wanna lose it, no
This for life, baby, you should know, you should know
Baby I know"
Pen Griffry is back fighting for his woman in this track. He just dropped the ball a bit. In one joint he claims to be putting in "Overtime" but cites in this track "contradicting all the things I've been preaching in songs". He started off good but has slipped backed to his old ways. However, he has realized this and is ready to make amends before his love goes and finds someone else.
"Lord please save her for me, do this one favor for me
I had to change my player ways, got way to complicated for me"
"Saw you strollin' through the campus, I had to stop for you
I was scrollin' through the 'gram, girl, I had to follow you
Say wassup witchu? You got my soul..."
This track holds the most powerful lines of the Trap Soul project in "Lord please save her for me". Tiller acknowledges that his ways have gotten out of hand. He is ready to give all of himself up for love. "So give me all of you, in exchange for me".
WHAT CHICK ISN'T GOING TO FALL FOR THAT LINE?
This song lowkey reminds me of Dwayne and Whitley's relationship on A Different World. Dwayne always got in his feelings thinking about Whitley (good or bad). Their relationship went rocky but both wished they could do it different. Dwayne was not a player but he had to change a few ways as well as her to make things work. At the end of day, Dwayne ran to the alter and basically said "You Got My Soul" and in result got his girl.
Am I reaching or nah?
Maybe but he's the voice of a lot of other things as well. He is the voice for the guy that took his girl for granted. He is the voice for the guy who wasn't faithful. He is the voice for the guy that did not know what he truly wanted was in front of his eyes the whole time. He is the voice for the guy who is fighting to get his girl back He is the voice for the guy, through all his BS, has finally grown up and is ready for love.
Lastly, He is the voice for a lot of guys who don't know how to express or need a way to apologize for their actions.
Let's not forget about the ladies who listen to his music. To sum it up simply, Tiller's tunes are a hope and dream for a plethora of women who have faith that one day their guy (that ain't sh*t one they keep dealing with) will have these same revelations Tiller sings in his lyrics.
