I think Greeks should take this movie as a challenge to get more involved with the youth in their communities. We have to show them that we more than what this movie depicts us as. They need to learn about the organizations, know what we stand for and know the type of people we are. We need to become role models and mentors to the youth in our communities. This next generation needs us more than most of us realize.
I also think the movie could have been more diverse. NPHC organizations are not the only ones that have issues with hazing. Hazing incidents have been occurring before the the first black collegiate Greek letter organization (Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.) was even formed. It is made to seem like hazing is a vital part of our NPHC organizations but if we are being honest, this occurs heavily in white Greek letters ones as well. For some reason (I am sure you can guess why) when people think of hazing, they think of the D9. In reality, the facts show most deaths from hazing involve majority white Greek organizations.
With that being said, I will say that the main point of the movie is something that members of all the Divine 9 organizations should take serious. The director said in an interview that his purpose of making the movie was based on the incident at FAMU when band member Robert Champion died from hazing. I would be lying if I said some hazing did not go on because the truth of the matter is that it does. No, it does not occur in every organization and every chapter but denying that some still do do it would be like saying water isn't wet. No, hazing is not cool. However, I would also be lying if I said Greeks should not have some sort of process. If being Greek was easy, everyone would be in an organization. In this movie, the fraternity brothers were reckless; they were more concerned about the guys finishing hell week than they were about their actual health. Your life should NEVER be in danger while striving to gain entry into a fraternity or sorority (remember this those reading who aspire to be Greek; oh and do not let anybody spit in you face either). A lot of us Greeks do not like this movie but we know some of this actually happens. We have to do better as organizations. While we do not want any one just walking into our fraternity or sorority, we do not want any one walking into a hospital due to hazing as well.
