A simple statement yet so many of us choose to indulge in acts we know will yield negative energy and not to mention negative outcomes. We live in a world where (plainly put) sh*t happens, so the least we could do, for our mental health’s sake is choose positivity over negativity. I recognize this is easier said than done, so I will not only give advice on what to do to protect you positive energy, but also give examples of how I actively pursue positivity.

Stop following followers
I am very aware and particular of the information I take in throughout the day, especially that on social media. Throughout the past couple of years we have added hundreds and for some even thousands of people as friends on various social media sites. We scroll and scroll not taking the time to evaluate the sort of messages we are digesting. Some messages are positive while others are mindless, petty, and immature. Do not even get me started on when ex’s friends send you friend request or you start lurking or become envious of what others have via social media. It is very easy to fall victim to social media frustration and while sometimes it is unavoidable and shared onto your timeline, most times it could be nipped in the bud with a simple unfollow. Be sure that all of your social media timelines are filled with people who care for you or at least promote positivity, seeing as though you are updated on their thoughts throughout the week.
Every friend is Not around forever…
we learned that lesson already
Seasons change and so do friendships. Every friend is not meant to be in your life forever. Some are seasonal. Learn to let friends go. Some of the most life-changing and AMAZING friendships are only meant to last a season. It is so cliché, but so true. I am sure you can think of friends you had in high school you would have literally gone to war for, that you have not talked to since high school. With college ending for many of us, we find ourselves in that very familiar position. I am not saying you should start dropping good friends like hot potatoes. However if you think of a particular person when I describe that friend that is not honest or not motivating, portraying this very shady, “foogazy” lifestyle for social media, but is living totally different in all actuality, maybe it is time you begin to distance yourself from them. How does this relate to positivity you ask? It is simple. If they are that sort of person, you probably do not enjoy your conversation or you talk shit about them when they are not around.
Either way it is not conducive to a positive friendship or lifestyle.
Make it a point to only keep the most genuine and positive people in your life.

be kind To Yourself
You have to be your number one fan.
No one understands your dreams or vision for the future like you do. It is okay to not share or be able to articulate your goals to others, as long as you understand your mission. In working to reach these goals remember to be kind to yourself. You are not going to nail every interview or receive a job offer from everyone in your network but that should not discourage you, keep trying! This is especially true for those who have recently graduated college. We walked out of our last undergraduate class prepared to conquer the world, unaware of the harsh realities the world would soon swing our way. As you work to overcome these trials do not discredit yourself. Your accolades are as relevant as they were when you first received them. You have literally been in school for the last 18 years, so it is okay if the first couple of years out of college are a little rough. As far as protecting your energy goes, begin by not speaking negatively about yourself. Encourage yourself through music, religion, or talking to those you can trust to cheer you on through every trial. As for nagging relatives each time an aunt or uncle asks,
“So Alaysia what are you working on next?”
I respond, “Wherever Lord the leads me is where I’ll end up.”
Literally I hear nothing after that.

I hope you’re able to adopt something from this list and make it a point to protect your energy throughout the rest of 2016.
