NBA Awards Predictions!
The Dallas Mavericks probably landed the steal of the draft when the New York Knicks drafted Frank Ntilikina and let Dennis Smith Jr fall into their laps. Smith Jr is an explosive guard and though not that big, he has been putting on a display of highlights since high school. Mavs coach Rick Carlisle offered praise for his rookie heading into the season and future Hall of Fame Dirk Nowitzki seems to be ready to hand the keys of the franchise over to him as well. Smith Jr is in the starting lineup right away and with Seth Curry being injured, he will get the chance to really put up some shots. I expect Smith Jr to take the league by storm and beat Ben Simmons in a close race for Rookie of the Year.
Eric Gordon won Sixth Man of the Year for the 2016-17 season while his teammate Lou Williams finished third. This season is a new year, he is on a new team and there will be more opportunities for Williams who I believe will reclaim the award his won in 2015. Williams had a better season last year than he did the year he won Sixth Man of the Year with the Toronto Raptors. However, after being traded from the Lakers because they wanted to tank, he ended up with Gordon on the Houston Rockets. This definitely hurt his case last season. Now Lou Will is on the Clippers. On this team, Lou Will has the opportunity to have his best scoring season yet. The Clippers are strong in the frontcourt with Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan but have questions at the wings as to who will actually score the ball. Expect Lou Will to get in the game and shoot at will.
We all want to see Derrick Rose return to being MVP Derrick Rose. However, we know that is likely to never happen. Rose did have his best season in years last season scoring wise averaging 18 PPG in a triangle offense not friendly to point guards. Rose is now on the Cleveland Cavaliers with LeBron James. My thing is...who doesn't play better on a LeBron James team?!? LeBron increases everybody's game around him and I believe that will be the same result for Rose. He also has a lot of motivation to be good this season due to the fact that he is betting on himself with the cheap contract his accepted to go to the Cavs. Rose told reporters teams next year will have to pay him double. I believe Rose will play well, show teams he still has something left in the tank and make it hard for Isaiah Thomas to get the starting role when he returns from injury.
There are a lot of coaches in the running for Coach of the Year this season but I believe Billy Donovan will get the nod. His team finished sixth in the West last season and it is a no-brainer (barring injury) that that will improve. Along with Russell Westbrook, he now has stars Paul George and Carmelo Anthony to help lead the charge and many consider them the one true threat to the Golden State Warriors.
Sam Presti can take the NBA season off. He managed to acquire Paul George and Carmelo Anthony for basically nothing. Give the man his award now and let him enjoy the season.
Draymond Green finally knocked off winning Defensive Player of the Year from his "Bucket List" last season. He should have probably won it the year before but things happen. Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz will be Green's biggest competition this upcoming season but Green has an advantage. Green's advantage over a lot of competitors for the award is that he doesn't have to worry about offense at all. He has Steph, Klay and KD for that. He can solely focus on defense and the other intangibles unlike Kawhi Leonard and now Rudy Gobert since Gordon Hayward's departure. I expect Green to snagged the award again.
My pick for MVP this season is Anthony Davis. When healthy, Davis is easily a top five player in the NBA. He produced his best season last year despite not being 100% healthy. Davis can simply do it all on the court. He can score from anywhere. He plays defense and is aggressive on the boards. The biggest problems Davis has had is staying healthy and having quality talent around him. The Pelicans traded for arguably the best center in the game DeMarcus Cousins to pair with Davis. The two didn't look to great together in their games together last season but with a full off-season together, things should change. Anthony Davis and Demarcus Cousins are the most interesting superstar duo in the league because they are the only tandem consisting of true big men. If it works out, it will be scary for the league. I believe the addition of Cousins will take attention off of Davis and allow him more space and opportunity. AD will lead his team to the playoffs and earn his first MVP award (30 PPG, 12 RPG, 3 BPG)
